La cirugía refractiva está diseñada como una alternativa a las gafas y lentes de contacto, para corregir pacientes con errores de miopía, hipermetropía, astigmatismo o presbicia. Durante estos procedimientos quirúrgicos se modifica el aumento refractivo del ojo, ya sea mediante la talla de la córnea con láser aplanándola o incurvándola, o mediante inserción o implante del lente intraocular en frente del lente natural del ojo (cristalino), con el fin de compensar el aumento y lograr una visión adecuada disminuyendo la dependencia al uso de anteojos.
En los procedimientos de cirugía refractiva corneal con láser, gracias a la tecnología de imagen computarizada, se crea un mapa de la córnea del paciente, lo cual permite medir anormalidades a detalle en la superficie, logrando programar una corrección personalizada en la visión de cada paciente.
